Spring can come early this far south. Snowdrops appear from the end of January and there are many signs of change in February. However, the most spectacular event happens around early May; an explosion of colour in the pastures: the arrival of the Orchids. Like the birds, there is a wide variety and carpets of colour.
Close to our home there are literally fields of orchids. At higher levels you can also find gentians and an array of alpine plants. There are limestone outcrops, mediterranean-type south facing slopes with wild asparagus. The fields also teem with butteflies. Bee-eaters swoop overhead.

Spring is also a great time to observe vultures. The Bearded are busy feeding their single, large young that fledges very early. Griffons are also searching far & wide for food. Egyptians are arriving from North Africa. See here for more information on our specific interest in vultures in the Pyrenees.
